Parrots (Psittaciformes)

Parrots are a diverse group of birds known for their intelligence, vivid colors, and ability to mimic human speech. They belong to the order Psittaciformes, which includes more than 390 species divided into three main families: Psittacidae (true parrots), Cacatuidae (cockatoos) and Strigopidae (New Zealand parrots).

General facts about Parrots

Size and Weight:
Parrots vary greatly in size. The smallest species, such as the Micropsitta parrots, measure around 8 cm and weigh less than 15 grams. Conversely, the largest species, the hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), can measure up to 100 cm and weigh around 1.2-1.7 kg.

Colors:
Parrots are known for their vibrant colors which can include green, red, blue, yellow and many other shades. Colors are the result of a combination of pigments and structural colors that scatter light.

Service life:
Parrots have a long lifespan that varies by species. Small species can live 10-20 years, while large species such as cockatoos and macaws can live 50-70 years or more.

Ability to Imitate Speech:
Some parrots, especially African gray parrots (Psittacus erithacus) and Amazon parrots, are known for their ability to imitate human speech and sounds.

Intelligence:
Parrots are highly intelligent and able to solve problems, use tools and learn complex tasks. They have an excellent memory and are capable of emotional bonding with their owners.

Diet:
Most parrots feed on a varied diet that includes fruits, seeds, nuts, flowers and sometimes insects. The diet depends on the natural environment and the availability of food.

Parakeet (Melopsittacus undulatus)

The parakeet, also known as the budgie, is one of the most popular pet birds. She comes from Australia and is known for her friendly nature and ability to imitate sounds.

Facts about Parakeets

Size and Weight:
Budgerigars are small parrots, reaching a length of around 18 cm and weighing around 30-40 grams.

Colors:
In the wild, budgerigars are green with yellow heads and black wavy patterns on their wings and back. In captivity, they have been bred in many color mutations, including blue, white, yellow and many other combinations.

Service life:
With good care, parakeets live 10-15 years, although some can live longer.
Ability to Imitate Speech:
Although not as adept at mimicking speech as some larger parrot species, parakeets can imitate simple words and sounds.

Diet:
Parakeets feed on a mixture of seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables. It is important to provide them with a balanced diet to avoid health problems.

Behavior and Social Life:
Budgies are very social birds and thrive in the presence of other budgies or regular human contact. They are playful and need lots of stimulation in the form of toys and interaction.
